Combo Beating Milky Up - Scene Analysis

  • Shaun has been accepted into the skinheads

  • combo - also a skinhead, but different physical attributes that separate him from Woody's gang.
> he has tattoos and has been in prison (recently left) along with his friend banjo.

  • transition of 2 shot to close ups of combo and milky
> for the purpose of showing each character's emotions from the exchange, Milky later describes it as "...an interrogation"

  • during the 'interrogation' a long shot is used - giving the impression we are looking into the conversation as it gets hostile later.
> "what makes a bad dad?" combo asks abruptly (after asking about Milky's family background) and then processed to call Milky, "a nigger". A close up of Milky's expression, turning into a smirk.
> this shows that he knows that it was too good to be true - Combo's façade of trying to be okay with him.
>Combo's body language turns hostile toward Milky

  • a close up of Shaun follows, showing he is uneasy with the situation

  • there deliberately (I assume) aren't close ups of the violence, here the directors chooses to focus on the reactions of the others present - not involved in the physical attack.
>Shaun is held back by Combo's friend (bald one without glasses)
>Combo bottles his friend, the other friend present says "you need to see someone" - shows how unstable Combo has become.
>post-assault, Milky's body isn't shown on camera (no full shots of how badly he was injured), Milky strays away from focus - he is laid face down on the floor with his face covered. Resulting in a build of suspense.
>the effect of not allowing the audience from seeing the full extent of the attack on Milky. This allows for tension to build as well as anticipation.

  • a point of view shot is portrayed through Milky's perspective, which allows for the audience to resonate with him, hopefully bringing up feelings of sympathy within audiences. this especially points out that Milky has done no wrong towards Combo - further adding to no motive for this attack.

  • Shaun is thrown out of the room while being called a "little cunt"
>this represents that Combo thinks of him either as a witness and/or a nuisance in the situation.

  • Combo repeatedly said "I'm sorry," to Milky's lifeless body. This emphasises Combo unstable mental state.
>this is followed by Shaun slowly/cautiously re-entering the main room; Shaun goes to Milky's body crying.
>Combo aggresively tells Shaun to stop crying - this links to theme masculinity.

  • Combo then follows with "don't look at his face" - the fact that Combo has feelings of ashamed of his actions, but it's not entirely made clear if this guilt is remorseful.
>this also shows that Combo might be worried about how Shaun may interpret his actions, and look at him differently a result of this.

  • The closing of the door as Combo struggles to carry Milky'd body to 'get him to a hospital', this symbolises the end of the scene and helps to create a lingering effect as the shot's focus stays on the door.

  • The English flag is hung up on Combo's wall, along with some other photos - things important to Combo. Although in this scene the flag is dirtier in comparison to when Shaun gifted it to Combo.
>this representative of how Combo never really showed his true self to the others, that he is a racist speaking false ideas to gain support for his own agenda.
>the fact that the flag has gotten dirty in Combo's presence symbolises Combo tainting the English name, and the purpose behind the skinhead movement in England at the time.

This scene is symbolic for when Shaun realises that the people he has been associating with weren't what he had thought. This is portrayed through sharp shifts in the shot focus during the attack, where Shaun is held down - showing that Shaun is against the attack, doesn't follow the same beliefs as Combo.
